Book Week 2023
Fri 28 Apr 2023Book Week 2023 has been a busy and exciting week. Here are some of the things we have been doing as a whole school.
- We have had visits from Bracknell Library telling us about how to borrow books and how we can use the local libraries.
- We have all been taking part in ‘Drop Everything And Read’ at the end of the school day and the teachers and children have enjoyed listening to a story or reading independently.
- We have had visits from 2 published authors. They have shared their books with us and we found out where they got their ideas from. We were able to ask them questions about their books and how to become an author.
- We all had the opportunity to dress up as a character from a book for World Book Day. All the children made a great effort and the array of costumes was lovely to see. We showed off our costumes to the whole school during an assembly and lots of children were inspired to read new books and reminded of books that they hadn’t read for a while.
- All the children have been given a Book Token to use at a local bookstore. You can swap your book token for a World Book Day book for Free. Tokens are valid from Thursday 16th February to Sunday 26th March 2023.

Hair Donation and Fundraising
Mon 20 Feb 2023We are always so proud when we see the children in our community living out their Catholic Social Teaching values. This week Esme, Nancy and Olive joined a very special group of children in donating their hair to The Little Princess Trust. Pictured are all the children who have donated to this charity over the past year.

Zero Waste Jumper Swap Day

Year 6 will sort and organise all the Christmas Jumpers and bring each class in to choose their Christmas Jumper from our Swap selection.
Parents, grandparents and Siblings all welcome to join in.
We are pledging to not buy any new Christmas Jumpers this year and to ensure everyone has something to wear!

CAFOD Harvest and Fast Day
Fri 07 Oct 2022Incredible response to request for urgent items that the Foodbank need. Many thanks to everyone in the SMC community who have supported us with this.
Also thanks to Matt White from CAFOD who is running CST workshops all day to help the children understand about their role in giving and looking outwardly to help others.

Mini Marathon Event
Fri 23 Sep 2022Dear Parents and Carers,
Today we have launched a very exciting event that we have entered as a school! We are going to be running the London 2.6 Mini-Marathon in aid of Make a Wish Foundation.
I am very lucky to be running London Marathon on Sunday 2nd October and I really wanted the children here at SMC to be part of the experience with me. We have had a special launch assembly today and they are certainly up for the challenge.
Mr Prower is going to be putting on special running events over the next two weeks in school to enable the children to all achieve their personal goal of 2.6 miles. As part of this we will all running our final section together as a community.
Running is such a passion for me and it is not about breaking records it’s about exercising outdoors and being part of something bigger. My mantra is always to put one foot in front of the other and not fall over!
Please encourage your children to raise sponsorship of at least £1 for Make A Wish which we will collect over the next two weeks and to cheer each other on along the way. We don’t mind if they run, walk or skip their way to their goal, it’s about doing something as a community together.

Welcome back to school - message from Mrs Mulholland
Tue 06 Sep 2022Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back! We are really looking forward to seeing you all on Monday for the start of the new school year. Years 1-6 were open for breakfast club (as always from 7.45am) and the gates open at 8.35am.
Year R have a special home visit from their teachers this week, which I know they are very much looking forward to. Then Year R will start on Monday 12th September.
A few reminders ahead of the term:
- All children are to bring their PE kit into school every Monday. It remains in school until Thursday every week. Then on Friday ALL children come into school in their PE kits for Fit Friday with Mr Prower! Some classes have PE on Monday (this week) so everyone needs their kit in school from day 1.
- Children need to be in full school uniform. Polo shirts (ONLY) for KS1 and shirts and ties for everyone in KS2
- Ties are available to purchase via Scopay, if you need to buy a one (Year 6 ties are now back in stock too)
- Children MUST all be in school shoes, not canvas black trainers, they are not acceptable as they are not waterproof!
- KS2 children ONLY need a small pencil case with basic stationary items included
- NO toys and games are to be brought in by the children. If your child has an educational need then a fiddle toy would need to be discussed with Miss Collins as part of ongoing assessments about the best way to support your child
- We have children with severe NUT allergies at our school, so no children can have any nut products in any items sent in from home.
- In KS2 your child can bring in a piece of fruit from home for their break time snack. KS1 fruit is provided.
- Your child needs a water bottle in school everyday of the year. We have clean fresh water that they can refill with in every classroom.
Meet the teacher information evening for Year 1-6 is on Wednesday 14th September. Year 1 & 2 will start in the hall at 6pm and Year 3-6 will be in the hall from 7pm. This will start with information on the new behaviour policy in place from Monday and the new rewards system and then will break into classrooms for specific information from your child’s teacher. It is important that as many parents attend this meeting as possible. This is an evening for parents, not the children, so please try and attend without your child where possible. In advance of this event I am attaching the new Behaviour Policy for you to read and acknowledge.
The Behaviour Policy has changed to ensure that all children are feeling safe in school and we have clear rules and rewards in place to support every child in the school. A school with good order and routines enforced enables excellence in learning and that is what we want for every child at SMC. Every child has the right to a full and rich curriculum and this will enable much for time and focus to be on that, with lots of opportunity to earn rewards and be noticed for showing excellent characteristics of effective learning. We are going to be teaching the new rules and behaviour systems to the children in the coming weeks and months, so please support us from home by reading it carefully and attending on the 14th September to hear more.
We also appreciate that there might be things that you need us to know ahead of term, that will help us to support your child next week. If there is please email enquires@smc-bracknell.com. If we know ahead we can make additional arrangements to support and nurture. We are immensely lucky to have support in place from Mrs Snowball our ELSA and Lily our School Counsellor when needed.
